San Francisco, CA - AI Agents are all the buzz in the birthplace of AI, and the engineers that work with them day-to-day are about to get a serious upgrade.
In classic founder fashion, the Amodei siblings were on a usual walk through the city of San Francisco, looking for problems to solve. They took one step into a rock climbing gym and the rest? History. A quote by a lead developer on the project to a BTO insider sums up their ethos:
We realized that what people are really interested in is the feeling of pride and accomplishment of scaling a wall they were previously unable to. The rigorous physical exertion and character growth in the face of adversity are just unintended negative externalities.
The AI lab focused several sprints on developing a highly convincing AI agent to absolutely smash this target market. Aspiring rock climbers can now simply sit on the mat below the wall, go to the Claude app on their phone, and experience a thrilling moment-by-moment recounting as their agent climbs on their behalf. Expect the type of punchy, action-packed descriptions that really get the blood pumping, things like:
Almost missed the dyno, heel hook saved me!
Never thought I would've flashed a V55 - you're so talented!
I'm getting coffee with the agent for that cute girl sitting at the bottom of the top rope - I think they liked our style!
The market logic behind the feature is simple. Demand is off the charts for agents to do work to replace your workers, commerce to replace your shopping, and to make art that will replace artists. The Amodei siblings are making a bet: now agents can do your exercise for you as well.
It's just another step in the Amodei's 10-year plan. BTO asked an executive assistant for comment. The grand vision?
Eventually people won't have to do anything at all. Ideally, we will just sit in pods while agents perform all tasks and leisure activities on our behalf. You'll get an end of day report on what you did with your friends, the things you learned, the stuff you created. There is really no reason to be doing all this manually when AI is just so much better at it. The pods will nurture you, milk you, and see that everything is attended to. Automating hobbies like rock climbing is a fantastic first step.
As always we can't wait to see what will be automated away next. Make sure to come back to find out first.
